In early March, Lea County, New Mexico, reported that the first adult died of measles since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/health\/article\/2025\/03\/08\/two-dead-nearly-230-sickened-in-us-measles-outbreak-cdc-says_6738940_14.html#\">2015<\/a> when a woman died from virus-induced pneumonia while on immunosuppressants.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These two deaths follow an extended period of anti-vaccination movements and conspiracy theories that discourage adults from vaccinating themselves and their children, possibly costing their lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The measles outbreak in Texas and, more recently, New Mexico has included <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/07\/health\/measles-outbreaks-texas-new-mexico\/index.html\">over 200 cases<\/a> so far; however, medical professionals report that this number is an undercount due to the speed of the rising cases of one of the most contagious viral diseases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXe4u8DukHph3SRhyHnRw260DZKbo-L2VydH97fed756gkQovlkdCtoXbV8oLsEqq-NEgUSDFKmgEw1W1TTUiWVsqXRYzGtAUe1c27GbhQABgHd6nZYVRXHp0tyUBiAxDX7kPxNk?key=PhgVF1MFsTwIxPd5PvrzyMJz\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:640px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: NPR<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Measles, which is especially dangerous for young children and the elderly, is prevented by the MMR vaccine, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nm.org\/healthbeat\/healthy-tips\/How-Contagious-Is-Measles#:~:text=Measles%20is%20one%20of%20the,are%20exposed%20to%20the%20virus\">90% of unvaccinated people who are exposed to the virus will be infected<\/a>. Measles most commonly causes death due to pneumonia and encephalitis caused by the virus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the science that defends the idea that the measles vaccine is <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/07\/health\/measles-outbreaks-texas-new-mexico\/index.html\">97% effective<\/a> after the two recommended doses and data that debunks the myth that it causes autism, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.texas.gov\/immunizations\/data\/school\/conscientious-exemptions\">17.5% of kindergarteners in Gaines County<\/a> had parents who filed for an exemption from vaccinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Donald Trump recently appointed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services. In response to the measles outbreak in Texas, he endorsed vitamin A and steroid interventions instead of encouraging people to get vaccinated, which is the usual response. Both are medically valid once someone is infected; however, health and infection professionals continue to emphasize that prevention should be prioritized.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXf9EounySxGDWH7rBC9ARW09FTSI_WPUeHlQiCz4_nwXlXDbG-Sdye6oGyjVfL2JIfI7nz3AaO7_KPFA7PLysdxWlxIlTwOLT-_PQtHJRE5Iq2n_0xev4nVAWRFg8XZYcxUcS6sOQ?key=PhgVF1MFsTwIxPd5PvrzyMJz\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:709px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: BBC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Additionally, vitamin A is most commonly used to treat measles in developing countries where patients already have vitamin A deficiencies and for patients where vitamin A deficiency directly correlates with the severity of the measles infection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitamin A is especially influential in measles patients, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7076287\/\">The World Health Organization even recommends a daily oral dose of vitamin A for two days to children with measles<\/a>. However, many believe that giving children high doses over long periods of time will prevent measles; in actuality, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/03\/07\/nx-s1-5320352\/measles-rfk-west-texas-outbreak\">vitamin A taken over time becomes detrimental to children<\/a> and can cause liver damage and hair loss without preventing measles at all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVitamin A is recommended for children diagnosed with measles to help prevent complications, particularly in children who are hospitalized,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/aapnews\/news\/31490\/AAP-leaders-combating-misinformation-amid-measles?_gl=1*wqh8ht*_ga*Nzg2Nzc3MTgzLjE3NDE0NjYwNjc.*_ga_FD9D3XZVQQ*MTc0MTQ2NjA2Ni4xLjEuMTc0MTQ2NjEzNS4wLjAuMA..*_ga_GMZCQS1K47*MTc0MTQ2NjA2Ny4xLjEuMTc0MTQ2NjEzNS4wLjAuMA\">said Sean T.
