97 million views<\/a> in its first 10 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe film follows TSA Agent Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton) as he\u2019s confronted with a major conspiracy: he must let a conspicuous carry-on bag pass through his security checkpoint, or else his pregnant girlfriend Nora (Sofia Carson) dies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He listens to the instructions of a spine-chilling villain (Jason Bateman), who speaks to him through an earpiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The film (surprisingly) fills up its nearly two-hour runtime; there are plenty of twists, violent fight scenes and dramatic sprints through terminals (I much prefer the ones found in a Rom-Com).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A little reality must be suspended in most action movies. \u201cCarry On\u201d is no different, except for the lingering question of \u201cWhat if?\u201d Maybe it\u2019s why thrillers keep our heart rates speeding, sometimes even more than a fantastical horror movie: real-world scary petrifies us, we see ourselves in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leo Kanner (Form V) liked the movie, but thought the plot was \u201ca little dumb.\u201d He said, \u201cThough, it did make me think about every time I get on a plane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Isabel Gorman (Form V) agreed that the movie had disappointments. \u201cIt had a disappointing ending,\u201d she said. \u201cA lot of buildup but it got boring.\u201d Gorman said she has no plane anxiety or airport anxiety and was fine watching the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, some people\u2019s anxiety deterred them from watching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Macy Griffith (Form VI), who hasn\u2019t yet watched \u201cCarry-On,\u201d said, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t watch a movie about a plane crash when I\u2019m on a plane.\u201d Griffith admitted to having plane anxiety, which is new for her. \u201cI\u2019ve been flying since I was little and didn\u2019t have it,\u201d she said. \u201cI just started in the last couple of years to actually think about what would happen if we crashed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not a rational fear,\u201d said Charlotte Symons (Form V), defending those with plane anxiety. \u201cWhen people are scared of stuff it\u2019s not because they think rationally. When I feel turbulence I feel scared not because I actually think I\u2019m gonna die, but because I just have an uncontrollable reaction to it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I watched the movie with my family during winter break. Thankfully, as my sister joked, after we finished all our travel. After \u201cwalking the dog\u201d (how my dad refers to the endless scrolling between streaming apps), we settled on \u201cCarry-On.\u201d A slow start, but purposefully \u2013 we learn about our protagonist, and the movie succeeds in a necessary goal: we begin to care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Initially, the plot seems one-of-one. Most thrillers don\u2019t choose their location as a salmonella-infused, depressing grey landscape. Although designated as LAX in the movie, the airport could be any such one across the globe. The chilly message is clear: this could happen anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And with that, the movie finds its footing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the frightened fliers, this movie isn\u2019t for you. For those who enjoy the thrill before takeoff \u2013 the moments before the wheels lift from the ground \u2013 you\u2019ll feel that familiar shiver throughout the two-hour movie.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
