Nothing screams sophomore year quite like enduring a two-day exploration of the Boston sprawl in the late days of a scenic New England fall. A rite of passage for Fieldston’s Form IV class, the Boston Trip is more than a plunge into pockets of the city’s past (and, for some, Walden Pond itself). The excursion brings each year’s tenth graders together and offers real-world applications for topics studied across English, history and humanities. Through traversing the Freedom Trail and thinking the transcendentalist thoughts of Thoreau, the pilgrimage is at all times an escape from the typical Fieldston routine and an adventure both literally and ideologically. With some students intent on moving to Massachusetts and others recovering from six miles walked through an uncharacteristically sweltering heat, this photo essay captures the trip’s highs, lows and the beloved multi-hour bus rides in between.
