It’s that time of year again — the time when what seems like the whole school rushes down to Chelsea Piers to watch the face-off of the season: the Fieldston Eagles Ice Hockey Team vs. Poly Prep. Parents, students and faculty alike trickle onto the bleachers of the cold rink, shaking with excitement and chills.
In the past, students have brought their school spirit and loud voices to cheer on our team while the players battle it out on the ice. The games are often close — decided by a goal or two, but last year, our Eagles annihilated the Poly Prep Blue Devils, 7-0.
This week, I sat down to discuss the season with two members of the hockey team: Jake Godosky (V) and Noah Breite (V), who are both eagerly anticipating this year’s big game.
“I guarantee a win,” said Jake Godosky about the Fieldston/Poly game. “I really believe in our team… Our fans are going to bring us top support, and that’s our fuel.” Noah agreed; “Poly is going to be tough competition, but we got this.”
Although the team has had to deal with some weather related issues as well as some injuries, they are still fighting strong. “We’ve had some disappointing games, but I feel like we’re coming together as a team.” Noah added, “We don’t have the same aspect of leadership as we’re used to, but I feel like we’re starting to get there, you know. The juniors and seniors are starting to step up and give us that presence we need in the locker room.”
This game is not one to miss. The entire team has rebounded from injuries, with every player ready to go. Coach Kirk Jackson wants all of the support possible to help cheer on the team. Come out and support the team at 8:30pm at Chelsea Piers on February 21st. It is the place to be if you want to witness our Fieldston team make history.
