FIELDSTON, NEW YORK – In their Junior Varsity Gym, the Eagles got out to an early lead over the Trevor Day Dragons and never surrendered it. Helped out by eight first quarter turnovers from Trevor Day, Fieldston scored the first 11 points of the game, capped off by a dunk from forward Sam Bienvenu (Form VI). They led 23-7 after the first quarter.
The Eagles maintained the double-digit lead for the rest of the game, the Dragons getting no closer than within 14 points. The afternoon win was the second blowout for Fieldston in as many days, outscoring opponents 145-88 in the two games.
Fieldston coach John Dwinell put the pressure on Trevor Day early with a full court press, forcing 19 turnovers and scoring 23 total points off turnovers. Even though his team committed 16 fouls with the aggressive play, Trevor Day didn’t take advantage, shooting just 6/15 (40.0%) from the charity stripe. Despite Dragons’ coach Josh Kingsley managing to draw up plays to limit the turnovers, the Dragons remained inefficient from the field, shooting just 17/50 (7/25 from three). In the fourth quarter, they shot 4/17 (23.5%) from the field and made two of ten three-pointers, allowing Fieldston to continue to pull away.
Bienvenu led the Eagles with 21 points on 8/14 shooting (5/9 from three). He added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Bienvenu’s eight fourth quarter points helped seal the game 72-47 for the Eagles.
Forward Lincoln Steinkamp (Form V) added consecutive three-pointers late in the game as well to pad Fieldston’s lead after Trevor had a quick six-point run. Steinkamp scored 18 points in total, albeit inefficiently. He shot 7/20 from the field (3/9 from three) and made one of his two free throws. The junior added five rebounds, an assist and two steals. Steinkamp was also called for four traveling violations; ten were called in total, eight of which against Fieldston.
Though Fieldston pulled away early, it wasn’t a clean win for the Eagles. They shot just 43.1% from the field (28/65), 34.4% from three (11/32) and only attempted six free throws, of which they made five.
Guard Shaan Daly (Form V) added nine points for the Eagles on 4/9 shooting (1/4 from beyond the arc) and gathered two rebounds, an assist, a steal and Fieldston’s only block. Carter Samuels (Form VI) scored just six (3/6, 0/2) but had an all-around productive day for the Eagles. The point guard added four rebounds, five assists and two steals, continuously putting pressure on the Dragons.
The Eagles improved to 12-3 on the season with the win and increased their winning streak to six games; they next play at home Wednesday afternoon against Collegiate. Trevor Day fell to 12-6 with the loss; the Dragons’ next game comes Wednesday evening at Grace Church.
