The Learning Center is a department, a collection of talented specialists and a dedicated space where students meet weekly with their assigned teacher to discuss their coursework, manage assignments and receive academic support. The Center is really a fellowship of instructors and mentors guided by chair Abby Diamond. Fieldston is fortunate to have a dedicated team that includes Sarah Baglio, Jessica Romano, Kristin Richer, Carly LaScala, Sarah Newton, Jessica Nelson, Vanessa Solomon and Joe Watson. The offices are largely concentrated in the 200s Administration Building. The school deeply appreciates their hard work and commitment to helping students thrive in the classroom. At Fieldston, students travel with the same Learning Specialist during their Upper School journey. The Learning Center helps students secure accommodations for tests, assignments and technology use during class. Lastly, Learning Specialists strive to ensure that students feel comfortable with their school subjects and develop a genuine love for learning.

Challenging yourself and tackling difficult assignments are essential to academic success. Learning specialists are here to help with that. These personalized teachers assist students in achieving personal growth and helping to build balanced study techniques. They encourage students to put forth their best efforts in analyzing topics and projects, helping them approach their homework more effectively.

Zoe Tuchman (Form III) shared her experiences with the Learning Center, stating, “Mr. Watson is my Learning Specialist, and I think it is a very helpful organization where he helps me manage my time. In addition, we plan days to complete my list of tasks when I am overloaded with work.” In summary, Zoe feels that the Learning Center benefits students struggling with procrastination or organization.

Similarly, Nikki Levine (Form III) said, “I have Ms. Solomon, who is mostly helpful with getting my work finished. We meet once a week in a timely manner. I started having her a few weeks into this year, and so far, I enjoy our time spent together.”

Overall, the Learning Center is a useful resource where students can receive support, develop essential academic skills and build meaningful relationships with their Learning Specialists.  Many students leave each session feeling successful and accomplished, prepared to take on their coursework.
