On October 24, the Jewish Affinity Group hosted a Sukkot celebration under the Sukkah on the senior grass, bringing people together and spreading community at the beginning of the school year.
Sukkot is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the fall harvest. It is traditionally celebrated on the 15th day of the Jewish Month of Tishrei. This year, the holiday fell from October 16 to October 23 in the Gregorian calendar. A tradition of Sukkot is building Sukkahs, small temporary houses with at least two and a half walls where meals are eaten during the holiday. Sukkahs are decorated by family and friends, so to bring the community together, the Jewish Affinity Group had community members come and decorate, constructing colorful paper chains.
As the Sukkah was on the senior grass, the rule was broken for this event. There were few underclassmen but a decent number of juniors and seniors, Ellie Usdin (Form VI) said, “It was nice to gather within the Sukkah outside rather than meeting in a classroom.” She also mentioned that it was nice to get to know people in other grades.
“This year, the Jewish Affinity Group is focused on spreading joy to others and creating a strong and uplifting community of Jewish people and members of the Fieldston community!” said Usdin.
Throughout the year, the Jewish Affinity Group is hosting tons of fun events, so look out for emails or announcements in the coming weeks and the rest of the year!
