In a shocking announcement on November 21, 2025, far-right MAGA Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia announced that she will resign from Congress on January 5, 2026, after a heated ‘breakup’ with President Trump. Her resignation marks the end of a turbulent five-year career in the House that made her one of the most recognizable and controversial figures in United States politics.

Greene, 51, was first elected in 2020 and built her political identity as a Trump loyalist. She defended him consistently, including supporting his disputed claims about election fraud—positions from which many Republicans distanced themselves. She became known for her combative style, frequent clashes with Democrats and members of her party, and, of course, her radical conspiracy theories. But her resignation comes at a moment when she has become increasingly isolated from Trump and from Republican leadership.

What ultimately pushed Greene toward resignation was her dramatic and very public falling-out with Donald Trump. Tensions had been building for months: she criticized Trump’s decision to launch airstrikes on Iran, his unwavering support for Israel, and what she viewed as his failure to rein in big tech companies. But the final break came over the issue of Jeffrey Epstein, the late financier and convicted sex offender with long-standing ties to Trump and other powerful figures. Greene blasted Trump for his reluctance to order the full release of the Epstein files, arguing that transparency was essential. She even appeared on Capitol Hill alongside Epstein’s victims and, in a rare move, several Democrats to force the House to bring the matter to a vote.

She continued to side with Democrats on several occasions and even attacked Trump’s economic policies, stating that Trump is not abiding by his ‘America First’ promise. In her official resignation statement, she said she “refuses to be a battered wife”, referring to how she felt she had been treated by her party and former allies.

Yet for many observers, Greene’s resignation was not entirely surprising — and in fact, several Republicans had been openly urging her to step aside. Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, one of her most vocal GOP critics, once said, “She is a horrible leader. She is dragging our brand down. She, not the Democrats, is the biggest risk to us getting back to a majority.” Former Representative Adam Kinzinger went even further, calling Greene “the biggest con artist ever.”

Much of this backlash stemmed from Greene’s long history of promoting conspiracy theories that alarmed and embarrassed more moderate members of her party. Among the most controversial were her past claims that 9/11 was a government-orchestrated hoax, that the Rothschild family had used space lasers to start California wildfires, that the government controlled the weather to influence the 2024 election and that a so-called “white genocide” was underway. These statements generated significant outrage and contributed to growing pressure within the GOP for Greene to step away from her role in Congress.

Greene’s departure will trigger a special election in Georgia’s 14th district, as well as new challenges for House Republicans who already hold a narrow majority – now facing even tighter vote margins. Her resignation also highlights the ever-growing divisions that exist within the Republican Party, especially regarding President Trump. Greene is part of a larger phenomenon we see with this administration: only a few short months ago, Elon Musk and Trump were ‘best buddies,’ but now they are just acquaintances. When a party can’t even agree on its own issues, it begs the question: Will two opposing parties be able to come to a resolution? The recent government shutdown offered one answer. All these issues combined are larger themes of the U.S. continuing to move toward extreme polarization, rather than succumbing to our disagreements and working together for the common good of our nation.

Greene has not announced any future political plans. She said only that she plans to “continue fighting for the country,”. For now, her decision marks the end of one of the most dramatic and headline-making careers on Capitol Hill in recent years — and leaves both supporters and critics wondering what her next chapter will look like.
