On November 25, 2025, Matchday 5 of the Champions League started. This was a widely anticipated day due to some of the biggest and best teams in the world going head-to-head this week, most notably Arsenal vs. Bayern Munich and Chelsea vs. Barcelona.

Played at Chelsea’s home of Stamford Bridge, the home crowd roared as Chelsea, second in the Premier League, and Barcelona, second in La Liga, fought the game. Both teams were in great form despite injuries to Cole Palmer of Chelsea and Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. The game started, and the teams were off. In the third minute, there was a beautiful dribble down the side and a pass into the box that led to a goal from Enzo Fernandez for Chelsea, which was unfortunately negated due to an offside penalty. A few minutes later, Chelsea was passing near its goal, and Barcelona’s tactics and fierce pressing led to an interception of a pass and a missed shot . Both goalkeepers continued making diving saves, and the game remained balanced. In the 20th minute (which player) fouled (which player) on Chelsea and got a dangerous free kick outside the box, where Fernandez scored another goal negated by offside. Specifically, the offside rule is that if a player is behind the second to last defender when the ball is kicked and he interferes with the play, then the goal does not count. Chelsea got a few more chances, and one of them finally went in the 26th minute, when Marc Cucarella dribbled down and passed it into the box for a Chelsea shot that hit Barcelona defender Jules Koundé and went in as an own goal. After that goal, both teams missed some chances (or the goalie saved it), and the score stayed 1-0 Chelsea until halftime. Just before halftime, Ronald Araújo, a Barcelona defender, made an egregious tackle and got a second yellow card to send Barcelona into the halftime down one man and one goal.

The second half kicked off, and five minutes in, Chelsea scored another offside goal from a beautiful give-and-go run that went in partially because of a goalkeeping mistake. Chelsea was running again, and in the 54th minute, Estêvão dribbled past multiple defenders and gave Chelsea a two goal lead with a beautiful shot into the top of the goal. Twenty minutes later, after multiple impressive saves on both sides, Chelsea dribbled into the box and passed the ball multiple times around to get the Barcelona defense  in shambles and allow Liam Delap to kick it in, but his goal was once again called off for offside. However, the call was challenged, and since the offside player hadn’t interfered with the ball when he was in the offside position, it was awarded a goal, and Chelsea went up by three. In the final few minutes, Barcelona got a free kick outside the box that was cleared, and Marcus Rashford took a shot that went wide. 90+3 brought the final whistle.Chelsea had won, and Barcelona left Stamford bridge with no goals and a lot to think about, as it will play Atlético de Madrid next weekend in La Liga, and Chelsea, on top of the Premier League, will face Arsenal, who is currently on top of the Champion League.

This game put Chelsea in 7th and Barcelona in 18th in the Champions League. This puts each of them in the top 24, which is needed to qualify for the playoffs. However, there are still three more matchdays where anything could happen. The man of this match was Cucurella, who had an assist and played a great game at right back with his skilled defending. For Matchday 6, Chelsea will play the Italian side Atalanta, who are known for their offensive skills and beat Frankfurt by 3 goals in Matchday 5 and are ranked 10th. Barcelona will play Frankfurt, who are ranked 28th and need a win in the Champions league to try to get into the top 24.

The day after, another heavyweight clash, this time between Arsenal and Bayern, stole the spotlight. Both teams had done exceptionally well in the Champions League group stage so far, winning all of their games and taking maximum points, sending them both to the top of the table. Outside of the Champions League, both teams had been near perfect in their domestic leagues, with Bayern taking the top spot in the Bundesliga and Arsenal holding steady at number one in the Premier League. The titans squared off at Emirates Stadium in London, Arsenal’s home stadium, giving them a slight advantage in this clash.

After kick-off, Bayern looked to control the game, getting long spells of possession. But Arsenal had a potent counter-attack, stealing the ball and nearly getting a shot off early. The game was paused to attend to an injury to Bukayo Saka, one of Arsenal’s star players and the team captain. Saka proved his worth after shaking off his injury and assisting the first goal of the night, a header from Jurrien Timber in the 22nd minute. It was a corner that Arsenal won that allowed which player to cross the ball into the box and turn it into the goal. The fans roared, as Bayern attempted to fight back against Arsenal’s high press. Arsenal was again capitalizing on counterattacks, with Eberechi Eze flashing a shot wide. Bayern was able to equalize the score in the 32nd minute, when Joshua Kimmich sent a long ball out to Serge Gnabry, who passed to the young Lennart Karl. Karl shot past David Raya to keep Bayern in the game, making the score 1-1. It was anyone’s game after the goal, with scrappy play resulting in great chances for both sides, along with the first two yellow cards of the game, one shown to the Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta and the other shown to Bayern’s Konrad Laimer. After three extra minutes, the teams went into halftime still tied. That score would change, however, in the second half.

Almost immediately after the game restarted in the second half, Arsenal took the ball and won a succession of corners, which Bayern did well to defend. It just wasn’t Mikel Merino’s night, as the Arsenal midfielder blasted a shot over the crossbar then had a header saved and whipped one beyond the post. Manuel Neuer, the experienced Bayern goalkeeper, was able to keep Arsenal at bay, even after a scrappy bit of play that saw Declan Rice nearly score. Arteta then made the first substitutions of the night, bringing Saka and Myles Lewis-Skelly off for Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel Martinelli. This had an instant impact in the game, because in the 69th minute, Calafiori crossed the ball to Noni Madueke, who finished past Neuer to break the deadlock and once again put Arsenal in the lead. Bayern looked much more broken and tired after this goal, as it attempted to claw back a point but couldn’t get a shot off at all, let alone a shot on target. Their coach, Vincent Kompany, decided to make a substitution as well, taking off Gnabry and Laimer for Nicolas Jackson and Tom Bischof. Their introduction into the game did not have the same impact as Calafiori and Martinelli’s, though, because Neuer made a terrible mistake that led to Martinelli bagging Arsenal’s third goal of the game. Eze passed the ball to Martinelli, who made a run into Bayern’s half. Neuer came way out of his box to shut down the threat, but he couldn’t stop Martinelli and could only watch as Martinelli slotted the ball into the net, the crowd raining cheers down on the Arsenal team. For the remaining twenty minutes (plus about four for extra time), Arsenal looked to be in complete control of the game, dictating the pace, having most of the possession and not letting Bayern get a look at goal. It might not have been a flawless victory, but at the fulltime whistle, Arsenal had taken the top spot in the Champions league, while Bayern had to settle for second.

After the game, Arsenal celebrated its well-deserved victory with its fans. Rice was named the Player of the Match for his constant defensive presence and his set-piece masterclasses, although none of them led directly to a goal. In the end, Bayern’s turnovers and goalkeeping mistakes were what cost it the game, although it remains high in the Champions League table. Bayern will look to face easier opposition in the next matchday in the form of Sporting Club Portugal, while Arsenal will tackle Club Brugge, the Belgian side that S.C.P. defeated 3-0.

A few other interesting upsets and interesting games happened on Matchday 5, including Manchester City losing to Bayer Leverkusen at home 2-0 and last year’s Premier League champions, Liverpool, also losing at home 4-1 to the Dutch team PSV Eindhoven.
