I had the pleasure of catching up with Fieldston alum Raz Mehta and learning all there is to know about the University of Southern California. Mehta is currently studying philosophy, politics and economics. He graduated from Fieldston in 2021 and will graduate from USC in the spring of this year.

Scarlet Koons: What advice would you give to current students at Fieldston as they prepare for life after graduation?

Raz Mehta: Go outside of your comfort zone, meet people from across the world and keep an open mind about what you might want to do after college.

SK: What initially attracted you to USC, and has it lived up to your expectations?

RM: I was pretty unfamiliar with USC when I got in, so I didn’t have many expectations. Luckily, because of the people I’ve met, the classes I’ve taken and the experiences I’ve had (as well as the incredible weather), I’ve had an incredible time. I have loved my time at USC and cannot recommend it enough to any graduating Eagles.

SK: What has been one of your favorite academic experiences at USC?

RM: In my junior year at USC, I took a class in the Marshall School of Business called “Innovation Economics.” In this class, we conducted deep dives into three different industries: autonomous vehicles, video games and beer. I found this class particularly enjoyable because it allowed us to learn about the problems businesses face through the lens of real businesses.

SK: Have you had any internships or study abroad opportunities during your time at USC?

RM: I unfortunately was unable to study abroad, but I have completed three summer internships at different investment firms since coming to USC, including one in Los Angeles.

SK: In what ways has USC challenged you or helped you grow?

RM: By living so far away from home, USC forced me to become independent and to make friends in an unfamiliar area. This experience has been very rewarding, and I am sure it will help me in the future.

SK: What is the most valuable lesson that you have learned at USC that you plan on using in the future?

RM: USC has taught me the importance of making memories, meeting new people and trying new things. While, at times, school can feel overwhelming, I always like to remind myself that what I’ll ultimately remember from my time at USC are the people I met and the memories I made.

SK: How did Fieldston prepare you for the academics?

RM: Fieldston prepared me well for USC’s academics. USC can be quite challenging at times, but the habits I developed at Fieldston allow me to get through academically tough times.

SK: What are some of your favorite spots around campus? Can be for studying, hanging with friends, chilling etc.

RM: The USC Village, the beaches on the Westside of LA, Malibu, LA Weather and USC sports.

For seniors considering their next steps, it is important to spread your eagle wings and be open to new experiences. It is a critical skill that will help you in the future. USC offers a dynamic environment where stepping outside of your comfort zone is encouraged–whether it is through connecting with peers or pushing yourself academically. Embracing new experiences, both inside and outside the classroom, will broaden your perspective and allow you to grow. No matter where you end up, always try to make the best of it and continue to spread your eagle spirit.
