The 2023 Fieldston Girls Varsity Basketball season was nothing short of a rollercoaster of triumphs, challenges, and heartbreak. In spite of how the season ended, the success of the girls’ varsity basketball team should not be diminished, as they played with intensity and determination throughout the season, producing one of the best seasons the team has ever had in recent memory.
Incredible performances from the recent additions to the team in combination with veteran leadership helped steer the team to an incredibly impressive 22-4 record throughout this past season. The Eagles cruised to that impressive record in large part due to their efficient offense, which led them to several sixty-point victories, as well as multiple games where the team scored more than 70 points. It should be no surprise that such an impressive and incredible season resulted in the team making it to the NYSAIS final. It was a hard-fought game and the team was in it for much of the first half before Dalton began to pull away. Though they lost, their resilience and ability to make it to the finals two seasons in a row should be applauded, especially after losing many players from last season.
When interviewing the players to get a better understanding of their thoughts on the season, all of them mentioned the same thing – effort and commitment. All of them highlighted the strides that each and every player made towards bettering themselves as well as the team, something that was crucial to their success. When asked about the season, Susanna Audi (Form VI) said that,“We evolved as a team this season with the addition of so many underclassmen, so it was great that we were able to incorporate them and bond as a team.”
When asked about the cause of their success this season, Jade Ling (Form V) said,“We came together in one season which was a huge accomplishment.” She added that the addition of the underclassman and new players this season was also critical in their success and that she fully expects the team to “take it home” next season.
Although the final didn’t go our way, Fieldston should be proud of the team and the season we had this year. The team’s relentless willpower and our community’s undying energy should leave us with nothing but positive expectations for next year’s matchup. The basketball team’s future is brighter than ever, so all we can do is look forward to next season and the thought of raising a banner.
