As the weather warms up and flowers start to bloom over the next few weeks, Eagle pride will be on display on the fields, courts and courses, as spring sports kick-off. Practices have already begun for all spring sports including Boys and Girls Lacrosse, Ultimate Frisbee, Boys Baseball and Tennis, Girls Softball and finally the Co-Ed Golf and Track teams.
Athletes on each of the teams are aiming high this upcoming season. The Boys Baseball team is looking to improve upon its two straight semi-final appearances in the NYSAIS playoffs and third-place finish in the Ivy Preparatory League last season. The team brought back eight out of nine members from its 2023 starting line-up, and several upperclassmen to lead the team.
Girls Lacrosse, under new coach Aleya Corretjer, calls their season the “revenge tour.” The team finished with a 5-9 record last season; however, all team members are returning players with several new additions. Coach Corretjer seems pleased with preseason so far, saying, “The girls have high energy each day, and we have amazing leadership that has been there since day one.” The team and Coach Corretjer have high hopes for this spring; they are looking to make progress every day, have a winning season and make the playoffs.
The Boys Tennis team, under second-year coach Ana Baert, is excited about this season, in particular, because of the addition of assistant Coach Marcos Kroes. His strict and disciplined approach should provide enough support, especially given the unprecedented number of players (almost 30!) on the team. According to Coach Baert, preseason is going extremely well, with the team eagerly working hard. Coach Baert sees the season “as a win-win situation because we are able to build on all of the hard work from last year.”
The Boys Ultimate Frisbee team is eager to hit the field. The team that won the State Championship in 2022 intends to not skip a beat after eight seniors graduated from last year’s team.
Finally, the Golf team is looking forward to its trip to Florida and then being highly competitive in league play upon their return.
I am very optimistic about the prospects for all of our teams this spring, and hope everyone comes out to cheer on the Eagles!
