My name is Asher Georgiades (Form V). I am leading a community service drive at Fieldston from now until January 26th. Alongside the drive, there is an opportunity for students to fulfill their community service requirements.
I volunteer at St. Luke’s Church for a program called Community Closet, which provides food, clothing and hygiene products to people in need around the city. The program runs from 2-4 pm every Saturday.
As we all learned in the fall’s school-wide read, “Tell Me How It Ends”, New York City takes in massive amounts of immigrants. Recently, the numbers have increased dramatically.
The two places in the city responsible for providing clothes to immigrants recently flooded. The people they normally help are now directed towards us. As a result, we have been overwhelmed by the growing demand. We need more supplies and volunteers.
At Fieldston, I am organizing a drive for the most needed items: men’s clothes, jackets and other winter clothing and backpacks. There are bins to drop off donations scattered throughout campus: red bins in the 400s and 500s, as well as blue bins in the cafeteria and library. The drive will take place until Friday, January 26th. Any donations are greatly appreciated!
In addition, it would be very helpful to have more volunteers (especially people who speak French or Spanish). This will fulfill your community service requirement. It’s also a great way to practice language and help your community. Below is more information about the program: https://stlukeinthefields.org/event/3242002-2022-02-26-st-lukes-community-closet/
