The Apple Showdown

Fall is officially here, which means Halloween, crisp air, orange leaves and APPLES! Apples are a fruit consistently associated with fall. Hot apple cider, caramel apples and warm apple pie are just some of the apple variations that we see annually during autumn. In addition to the endless possible confections that can be made with apples, the different kinds of apples are boundless as well. Well, not actually boundless, but there are 7,500 different types of apples in the world! This can be overwhelming, and when deciding which type of apple you want to use for your apple pie, or for your afternoon snack, it can be hard to choose. So, to help you out we are going to try and rate different types of apples. We will be ranking them in four different categories: crispness, flavor profile, sweetness and juiciness. Then, we will tell you which type of apple we think is best. Although it would be nice to rate all 7,500 different types of apples, we can’t afford to buy all of those, so we will be rating five different types: Gala, Fuji, Granny Smith, Pink Lady and Honeycrisp!

Gala: 4/10

The first apple we tasted, with high expectations, was the Gala apple. When we took the first bite though, we were utterly disappointed. The first thing we noticed was the texture, which was very mealy and soft. The apple was a little bit crisp but didn’t make a satisfying crunch when we bit into it. It was on the sweeter side but didn’t have a good balance of flavor. The flavor of the apple reminded us a lot of the flavor of a pear. In addition, the apple was also not very refreshing. We gave this apple a 4/10 since it didn’t fulfill our expectations and wasn’t the quintessential fall apple.

Fuji: 3/10 (ew)

This apple deceived us. It was our least favorite by far. From the outside, it looked crispy and flavorful. But on the inside, it was mushy and too sweet. Our teeth sank right through the apple with no crunch at all. While it was juicy, it didn’t compensate for the overall texture and taste of the apple. We gave this apple a 3/10 because it was lackluster in practically every aspect.

Granny Smith: 5/10

After trying the iconic bright green Granny Smith apple, which is notoriously known to be very sour, we can conclude that this is true. The first thing we noticed was that it was quite hard to cut. This made us think that it would be really crispy. Turns out, the texture was crunchy but not crisp. As a result, it was dry and not very juicy. It was so tart that we genuinely thought it tasted like a warhead. Overall, this apple was a 5/10 for us.

Pink Lady: 4/10

The Pink Lady on the outside, was true to its name. With a vibrant reddish-pink hue, the inside was very white and shiny. It had a crunchy sound when we bit into it, but was firm and hard. As a result, it was not very juicy and it was actually rather dry. It did not have a good flavor because some bites were sweet and others were tart, but there still wasn’t a good balance of each. It also had a really thick skin, so if you want to try one, we recommend that you peel it first. This wasn’t our favorite apple because it was an overall bummer, and that’s why we gave it a 4/10.

Honeycrisp: 9/10 (yay)

The Honeycrisp apple had bright red skin with hints of yellow. Upon cutting into the apple, we noticed that it had a very juicy appearance. When we bit into it, we were pleasantly surprised by the crispness. The apple was very crisp and had a really satisfying crunch. The balance of flavor was perfect, with a nice blend of sweet and tart notes. We observed that this apple would make a perfect energizing snack, due to the burst of flavor that it contained, and the ideal amount of juiciness. Overall it was a really refreshing apple and had a great taste, so we gave it a 9/10.
