Welcome to audition week at Fieldston! After a week off for the Fall Recess, the Theater Department has jumped right in with two very exciting projects. Since Monday, November 28th, auditions and callbacks have taken place for the Spring Musical, Legally Blonde, and the Winter Studio Theater, Airness by Chelsea Marcantel.

The actors of Fieldston auditioning for Legally Blonde took the break to carefully complete their audition form, pick their audition songs and warm up their voices. A very eventful week ahead awaited them. Monday was the vocal audition: Students were asked to prepare 32-bars of their song of choice to sing. On Tuesday, the dance audition was held: The students were taught a combo from the show to learn and perform as a group. On Wednesday, the acting audition took place: they were asked to read chosen scenes from the show. Lastly, Thursday and Friday were vocal callbacks: certain actors were tasked with testing their vocal skills.

Auditions for Airness also took place this week. Directed by Emily Baglio (VI), Airness by Chelsea Marcantel is about a group of people who are passionate about air guitar and attend different air guitar competitions as a group. It tells a story about relationships, friendships, competition and more. On the first day of auditions, students worked on scene work, and the next day callbacks took place –they also performed a 30-second air guitar performance to a rock n’ roll song of their choice.

Students were encouraged to audition for both the Winter Studio Theater and the Spring Musical if they were interested. Chloe Keenan (IV) auditioned for both productions, and said that “it was a little stressful because they took place at the same time but going through the process is always helpful and exciting.”

Students Shayna Sacks (IV) and Sylvie Poisson (IV) both auditioned for Legally Blonde and were asked a few questions about their experience auditioning for the production this week.

Rachel Stulman (IV): “How has your experience been auditioning for Legally Blonde?”

Shayna Sacks:It has been a really great experience; Everybody is very supportive during the audition process and it also has been fun.”

Sylvie Poisson: “At the beginning, I was kind of nervous because I’d never auditioned for anything before, but after I did the singing audition I felt more confident and realized how fun the play is going to be. It turned out to not be nerve-wracking at all after Monday, and it is actually a fun process.”

RS: “Does audition week have a certain energy or intensity? And do you think that is specific to Fieldston?”

SS: “There definitely is an energy and intensity and I think it comes from the fact that everyone is really talented and also that there is a little bit of competition, but Fieldston makes the environment a lot more friendly than some other places might. There is always gonna be an intensity wherever you go in terms of auditioning for a show, but I think there is more comradery at Fieldston.”

SP: “I think being at Fieldston there is a lot of talent in the arts so I think the energy is a little competitive by nature, but everyone is so welcoming and honestly loving so it isn’t an intimidating environment to be in.”

RS: “What are you hoping to get out of being in the Spring Musical?”

SS: “I’m hoping to have a really good time and also perform a show in a different light than it’s typically viewed and just have a unique experience.”

SP: “I want to experience what it is like to be in a show and experience the thrill of performing in front of everyone because I’ve never done that before. And also create new relationships and meet new people.”

Sounds like audition week was a great success and there is a lot of excitement around the upcoming productions. We are looking forward to seeing all of the hard work put into these two productions come together this winter and spring!
