This fall, the Fieldston community welcomes the new Upper School Principal, Dr. Stacey Bobo.
Bobo grew up in Los Angeles, California and attended the University of California, Los Angeles. After graduating, she decided to become a teacher and began working in Compton, California. There, she was part of a program where she was matched with an older teacher who mentored her for three years. Bobo then finished her administrative credential and worked at a school in Miami. After that, she became the principal at the Lyford Cay International School in the Bahamas, and later, the Executive Director at the Hawaii Technology Academy.
Now, Bobo is at Fieldston, bracing herself for the cold winter soon to arrive. When she heard about the job opening at Fieldston during the pandemic, she decided to take the opportunity. She knew Fieldston was where she wanted to finish her career from her first interview, where she deeply connected with the teachers.
Before making any immediate changes, Bobo wants to really get to know Fieldston. She understands that Fieldston is a school that is constantly evolving and wants to further understand where Fieldston wants to be. She is working with the new Head of School, Joel Algrant, to get a sense of his direction and to get to know the Fieldston community. Bobo and Algrant are currently meeting with Form VI advisors to get advice on how to navigate the community. They are also working with Anthem of Us, the organization Fieldston recently connected with, in order to address inequities in the community. Bobo is also taking advantage of every opportunity she can get to connect with students, like attending sports games, going on field trips and meeting with Students of Color Matter.
Though Fieldston is a complex community filled with different people, Bobo strives to make sure that everyone is happy. She keeps equity at the forefront of her mind and believes that inclusivity is vital to the success of the school. She is working with the DEI department and the students and listening to students’ stories.
“I love the [Fieldston] community— it’s very warm and open. I love the diversity. I love that I’m learning a lot. Most of all, I love the students. I think [they] have been very kind and welcoming and thoughtful and fearless. I’m loving what I’ve seen so far and I’m looking forward to seeing more”, said Bobo.
