Girls Varsity Soccer
Sporting a 6W-4T-5L record, the Girls Varsity Soccer is only recently recovering from having many injured members. “Our Homecoming game was the first game with our entire starting lineup un-injured since four games before it,” Captain Neve Wallace said. “We had been impatiently waiting to redeem ourselves, and debut our capability to a particularly large Fieldston crowd.” While the outcome of the game was a 2-2 draw, “the team played the most coherently it had in weeks,” Wallace said. “Everyone was working their absolute hardest because they knew how much it meant. It is games like these that make me so proud and excited to be on a team like this.”
Girls Varsity Tennis
Girls Varsity tennis played hard during homecoming but came up short in their match against Poly Prep. “Even though we had a tough match and lost by a narrow margin,” Captain Isabel Astrachan said, “I think the team really came together and supported each other. It was especially nice to see former members of the team, Mara Goldberg ‘16 and Rori Sachs ’16, come back to watch us play and bond with the new players on the team. We have our last match against Riverdale and we’re excited to close out a really fun season with a win!”
Varsity Volleyball
The volleyball team has had an outstanding season. With a strong team that has won back-to-back state titles, seniors Gillian Gore, Maya Gemson and Shantel Sosa led the team to victory against Poly Prep. This critical match brought the team record to 13 wins and 1 loss. “The homecoming game was a really big win because it meant that we have a real shot at winning states,” Gemson said. “Poly has been the only team to beat us, and they will also probably be the team we play in states. Right now, getting ready for playoffs is the only thing on my mind because it’s not going to be easy, but I think as a team we can win a championship for the third straight year.”
Varsity Football
Fieldston Football made a lasting impression on the home crowd by beating Horace Mann 47 to 14. In 2015, the Eagles lost to the Horace Mann Lions at Homecoming in an overtime touchdown. This year it was all about the Eagles’ offensive attack. Captain, Tyler Kemp, was one of the MVPs for Fieldston, scoring two touchdowns, one of them being a nearly 90-yard catch and run. ”It was so surreal,” he said. “Listening to the roars from my friends and family during the game was unbelievable. There’s nothing like scoring multiple touchdowns at your last homecoming as a senior and being able to contribute towards a win. It’s a day that will stick with me forever”. Safety and wide receiver Kyron Thomas also played extremely well and knew that since it was his last year playing at a Fieldston Homecoming, “He needed to put it in the record books.”
Boys Varsity Soccer
Even though soccer struggled to find their footing at the beginning of the season, they were able to win an important game on Homecoming. Poly Prep’s best player got two yellow cards and was unable to play for the rest of the game, shifting the match in Fieldston’s favor. “We felt like we were in control of the game from the beginning of the match to the end, it was just a matter of time until we scored that first goal,” said Junior Jake Madsen. First year starter and goalkeeper David Runte loved the feeling of playing in front of such a great crowd. “Stepping out on the field for my first homecoming was easily the highlight of my high school soccer career,” he said. “As the starting goalie for varsity soccer, there is a lot of pressure on you to perform to the best of your abilities. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous going into the game, but I was able to make a couple of key saves and settle into the game. Our guys eventually came through and got the win.” The captain who scored the game-winning goal was Azeez Adeyemi. Although this was his last homecoming as a soccer player at Fieldston, Adeyemi’s goal in this game left a lasting impact. “I will remember this goal for a very long time,” he said. “Homecoming is a day of excitement, school pride, and joy. Everyone wants to win in front of a huge crowd. I will cherish the feeling of scoring the winning goal and allowing everyone to enjoy a homecoming win.”
Varsity Water Polo
The Water Polo team knew the game against The Pingry School this Homecoming wasn’t going to be easy. That did not stop them from fighting till the end; winning isn’t their sole priority, but to also play a passionate match for the home crowd. Junior, Ben Altschuler loved the energy that the crowd brought to the game. “ Because it was Homecoming, we had many more fans than usual come out and support the team,” he said. “We faced a very experienced club, but showed fight and spirit despite the final result.” Even though water polo is a recently created team, they are looking for more and more players to try out for the sport in the upcoming years and build the program.
Field Hockey
Field Hockey, coached by legendary gym coach Diane Toth, has had a very successful season with an 8W-7T-1L record. On homecoming, senior captain Isabel Egnatz said that they “played a great game and were able to pull out a win by a narrow margin of 1-0.” She also noted that this was an extra special win due to the fact that this was the first homecoming win for the seniors. Lastly, the team is really looking forward to making a deep run in the NYSAIS tournament at the end of the month.
