This year, FIeldston Ultimate’s A Team enjoyed yet another eventful season, featuring some major disappointments as well as great successes. In the city league, we won the majority of our games and reached the city finals – the third time in my four years on the team. In the city finals, Fieldston was the clear underdog against Stuyvesant, the defending state champions and a perennial Ultimate powerhouse. After an excellent start to the game with Fieldston leading 4-3, we were unable to hold the lead, and Stuy scored 4 unanswered points to win the city title 7-4. This game served as an important reminder that when we play our best, we’re capable of competing against the most skilled teams.
The culmination of our season took place at the USA Ultimate Youth State Championship, a two-day tournament over Memorial Day weekend in Schenectady, NY. Emboldened by our excellent play against Stuy, the A Team entered the tournament confident, and won all of our games on Day 1. On Day 2, however, we began the day with a crushing 6-5 loss to Regis, who we had beaten twice before during the regular season. Our hopes of reaching the state finals ended, and the A Team settled for a 5th place finish.
Despite this loss, I would say that this season was as enjoyable as any other that I’ve been a part of, and I suspect many on the team feel similarly. As I prepare to leave Fieldston, I know the friendships and memories that on Ultimate Frisbee will endure far past graduation.
