From the size of the crowd that gathered on the sidelines of the Sheagles vs. Canandaigua state final game, it was clear that the members of the entire Fieldston ultimate frisbee team were completely enthralled. Perhaps it was because the Sheagles were undefeated for the entire season, or because the team had made it to the finals of the State Tournament without losing a single match, or that the boys’ A team ended their last game early in a tie in order to watch the Sheagles bring home the victory. According to many of the boys, it was worth it to watch the Sheagles beat the Canandaigua Flying Bison 15-5.
Nick Garber (VI) remarked, “Obviously, the primary goal of everyone on A Team was to get as far as we could in the tournament, and we were all incredibly disappointed that we couldn’t get any further. But the fact that any one of our teams could win a state title is huge, so it was really awesome to witness that.” Lucky Lai (V) echoed his statement, “It was a thrill to even be watching. Every moment made my heart pound.”
All of the Sheagles were elated to have won the state tournament, but were also happy to just have been able to play with such a great group of people. Captain Jessie Hamilton (V), expressed her pride in the team, “It feels super rad to have won and I’m so proud of all of [us]!” Julia Rosenberg (V), shared a similar sentiment, “It was one of the most exciting moments of my life. Last year we had so few girls that we needed volunteers to even enter the tournament. To go from a rag-tag team to State Champions in two seasons has made me prouder than anything.” As the Sheagles have been undefeated this season, they will be playing in the championship game, this wednesday. As Max Fernandez (V) expressed, “I am confident [they] will do well and am excited to hear about it.”
